Introduction to IPS-aware maps

Available for an ArcGIS organization licensed with the ArcGIS IPS extension.

IPS-aware maps allow you to locate yourself indoors by displaying your current position on a map. These maps include a reference to an Indoor Positioning Data Service, a web feature service that contains the data required to support indoor positioning with ArcGIS IPS. IPS-aware maps can be used with applications that support ArcGIS IPS or with custom applications that use ArcGIS Maps SDKs for native apps. The data in an Indoor Positioning Data Service is consumed through the IndoorsLocationDataSource class, which is available in the ArcGIS Maps SDK for .NET, ArcGIS Maps SDK for Kotlin, ArcMap Maps SDK for Swift, and ArcGIS Maps SDK for Qt.

To create and configure IPS-aware maps, complete the following steps:

  1. Create and share an Indoor Positioning Data Service to your organization using the Share Indoor Positioning Data Service tool in ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Make a map IPS-aware by selecting a published Indoor Positioning Data Service from your organization in the Map Properties pane in ArcGIS Pro.
  3. Optionally, configure additional IPS parameters in the IPS-aware map, such as path snapping and outdoor positioning.
  4. Share the IPS-aware map as a web map or mobile map package to your organization.

Once you have created, configured, and shared an IPS-aware web map, it can be used in applications that support ArcGIS IPS.

Note:

If you are using an app that does not support IPS-aware maps, you can generate a legacy version of the ArcGIS IPS Information Model and indoor positioning files using the tools available in the Classic toolset of the Indoor Positioning toolbox. In such scenarios, you will need to manually add the IPS_Positioning table to each map that requires indoor positioning support.
