Display a presentation in full screen

A presentation can be displayed in full screen mode to stay within the application but maximize screen space and reduce the distractions of panes or ribbons. The full screen view is duplicated in that the full screen experience of the presentation is on both the your monitor to control as the speaker, as well as the display used for the audience. Map pages in the presentation remain interactive in full screen mode so you can navigate and show pop-ups.

Before presenting in full screen, consider the following configurations, which are described further in the sections below.

  • Set the preferred aspect ratio—Review or change the screen size for the presentation.
  • Use page advancement options—Using page properties, decide whether you will advance to the next page manually or use preconfigured timing settings.
  • Choose the full screen display monitor—Use this to set which monitor displays the presentation in full screen.
  • Preload the maps in the presentation—Run this before entering full screen to improve performance.
  • Refresh page thumbnails—Run this before entering full screen to ensure page previews are accurate.

Set the screen aspect ratio

Before presenting, consider what aspect ratio is best for the pages to fit the display screen. The default screen ratio is 16:9 and is the most commonly used. Other aspect ratios compatible with certain hardware or specialized options can be used. Set the appropriate aspect ratio to avoid unintended distortion or cropping issues.

To set the aspect ratio, do the following:

  1. On the Presentation tab in the Page Setup group, in the Aspect Ratio drop-down menu, click the screen size aspect ratio.
  2. Optionally, click Customize to configure a different ratio on the Custom Aspect Ratio dialog box.

The last three custom entries are saved in the list.

  3. To view the screen size aspect ratio with the corresponding page size values and units, click the Page Setup Options dialog box launcher in the lower corner of the Page Setup group to open the Presentation Properties dialog box.

Choose the full screen display monitor

Depending on your hardware configuration, you might be using multiple monitors or a projector to display the presentation in full screen. You can set the full screen display to use the monitor of your choice. By default, a full screen presentation uses what is set in the display settings of your operating system as the main monitor. Use the Full Screen drop-down menu to choose the full screen display monitor. Monitors are listed using their device name.

Note:

If you only have one monitor, and presenter mode is checked, then presenter mode will display instead of full screen mode. Presenter mode is intended for a dual monitor configuration but it can be used on a single display, for example, to practice the presentation.

Preload maps and update thumbnails

Preload the maps and scenes used in the presentation before entering full screen mode to improve playback performance.

Capture the most recent preview of each page to ensure the presenter mode display of full screen is accurate to keep you focused and on track. You can refresh all thumbnails at once. Right-click a page in the Contents pane and click Refresh All Thumbnails.

Present a presentation in full screen mode

To present a full screen presentation, do the following:

  1. If the project contains multiple presentations, ensure the presentation to display in full screen is the active view.
  2. On the Presentation tab in the Playback group, click the drop-down menu for the Full Screen button and choose the display to use for full screen if not using the default primary monitor.
  3. Select the start page for the presentation.

Full-screen mode starts from the selected page.

  4. Optionally, check Presenter Mode on the Presentation tab in the Playback group to display the presentation in a mode where you control your pages on another monitor that shows a preview of upcoming pages that only you can see.
  5. On the Presentation tab in the Playback group, click the upper part of the Full Screen button Full Screen, or use the keyboard shortcut Alt+F to begin presenting in full screen mode.
  6. Progress through the pages using the following options:
    • Use the Next Page Next Page and Previous Page Previous Page on-screen buttons in the lower corner of the full screen display. This gives you manual control to advance pages by mouse clicks using the on-screen playback buttons.
    • Use right and left arrow keys for keyboard control to move to the next or previous page.
    • Allow preconfigured page properties for automatic page advancement to play back the presentation pages. Pages automatically advance to the next page after a set duration on the current page. Video pages must be set to automatically advance with a time greater than the video duration.

When you manually advance after the last page, full-screen mode closes.

  7. Press Esc to exit full screen mode at any time during the presentation.

A presentation persists the current page when a presentation is stopped. Resume the presentation by pressing Alt+F or click the Full Screen Full Screen button again from the Presentation tab.

Interact with a presentation

You can interact with some pages by pausing the playback experience or, in the case of maps, you can explore by navigating or opening pop-ups while a presentation is being presented.

The following are ways you can interact with your presentation during playback.

  • Press the Spacebar or click the Pause button on the full-screen view to pause playback anytime during a video page. This applies also to any page configured with an Advance Page After duration. This gives you time to pause the page if necessary.
  • Map pages are interactive. The Explore tool Explore Tool is active and navigation keyboard shortcuts apply to the full-screen view. You can pan, zoom, or in a scene, tilt the angle of the camera perspective.
  • Use the Explore tool Explore Tool on a map page to click any feature and open the pop-up window to display attribute information.
  • If using presenter mode, switch to Tiled View to view all pages and choose another page out of sequence without interrupting the flow of the presentation.
