Keyboard shortcuts for working on the layout

Keyboard shortcuts can help you save time and be more productive when working on a layout. In most cases, the layout view must have keyboard focus (be the active window) to use the shortcuts. The shortcuts listed here are specific to the layout view, however, shortcuts for the Contents pane are also available when working with layouts.

Select on the layout

Use keyboard shortcuts to make selections.

Ctrl+A

Select all the elements on the page.

Ctrl+Backspace

Deselect all the elements on the page.

Shift+Down arrow key or Shift+Up arrow key

Continuously select elements.

Elements are deselected if you switch arrow keys while pressing Shift.

Edit on the layout

Use keyboard shortcuts to work with elements on the page. Most of these shortcuts require a selection first.

Delete

Delete the selected elements.

Copy the selected elements.

Ctrl+X

Cut the selected elements.

Ctrl+V

Paste the contents of the clipboard to the page.

Ctrl and drag

Immediately copy the selected elements to the layout without a paste command.

Ctrl+G

Group the selected elements.

Ctrl+Shift+G

Ungroup the selected group.

Spacebar

Switch the visibility of the selected elements.

Shift+Up arrow key, Shift+Down arrow key, Shift+Left arrow key, or Shift+Right arrow key

Nudge the selected elements 5 points.

Ctrl+Up arrow key, Ctrl+Down arrow key, Ctrl+Left arrow key, or Ctrl+Right arrow key

Nudge the selected elements .5 points.

Keyboard shortcuts for interacting with elements on the page

Edit text inline

Use keyboard shortcuts to edit text on a layout while in inline text editing mode.

Ctrl+K

Add a hyperlink to selected text.

Ctrl+Shift+L

Create a bulleted list. If multiple lines of text are selected, each line is given a bullet.

Ctrl+Shift+I

Create a bulleted sublist. This requires the cursor to be within a bulleted list or for the selected text to include bullets.

Ctrl+Shift+N

Remove the bullet. This requires the cursor to be within a bulleted list or for the selected text to include bullets.

Tab

Increase the bullet level. This requires the cursor to be within a bulleted list or for the selected text to include bullets.

Shift+Tab

Decrease the bullet level. This requires the cursor to be within a bulleted sublist or for the selected text to include subbullets.

Ctrl+U

Underline selected text.

Ctrl+Shift+A

Change selected text to all caps.

Ctrl+Shift+K

Change selected text to small caps.

Ctrl+Shift+Plus sign (+)

Display the selected text as superscript.

Ctrl+Equal sign (=)

Display the selected text as subscript.
